Work Party Sunday 4 January
Last January I bemoaned the weather, asking what happened to those bright and crisp January days, as heavy rain and sleet forced us to abandon the morning's work and retreat to the cafe.
It was a different story this year. It was crisp, cold and bright. A perfect day. We soon warmed up by pollarding Willow and Hazel trees, then transporting the branches to finish the job of dead hedging that we started in December.
Our second task this month was to continue hedge laying a section of the hedges surrounding the cattle fields. The aim is to encourage thicker growth from the base, which provides a healthier ecosystem for many species of plants, insects, birds and small mammals.
Many thanks to Ken Davies, Sylvene Greaves, Julia Davies, David Hyde, Yannick Forbes, Philip Gibbs, Russell Ball, Nicola Pazdzierska, Nick and Christine Gray and Catherine Green.
